Pop Up Windows

Page 1

You will need a basic understanding of HTML to get the most from this tutorial.

Today I want to talk about pop-ups. Hey, wait! Come back! I'm not talking about those irritating little boxes that attack you on entering some commercial sites and colonise your taskbar! No, no, the pop-ups I'm talking about are a very different breed. They're useful!

The best use I've found for pop-up boxes is as a kind of "expansion" to a web page. Say you've got a page of information, and at one point you want to offer the reader some more information on one particular subject, but to put it into the main article will break up your flow. Maybe you want to add a graphic with it, as well, but it doesn't match the theme of your page.

One way around this would be to have a link to another page with the explanation on it. However, this has the drawback of removing the reader from the current page, and runs the risk of them not returning to read the rest of the article.

So how about if you could open a little extra window which contained all the information you wanted to give, but didn't take the viewer away from the page? Wouldn't that be great!

Continue to page two, and I'll show you how to do it.
